This hat is sized for age 3-6. I don't think cotton yarn was a good choice because it pills, but it probably feels good to young children. I used a pattern from Little Badger Knitwear and just felt disappointed by the quality of the pattern writing. I found enough typos and inconsistencies in the book that I just didn't trust this pattern. The patterns in the book did not have measurements so it's difficult to tell if the gauge was printed incorrectly if substituting a different yarn. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with children's sizes and didn't have a nearby child for fitting. I also ran out of yarn (grr!) and had to improvise, hence the light blue "dot" on the top of the hat. Completed April 2002.
Pattern: Heart Hat in Little Badger Knitwear by Ros Badger and Elaine Scott
Pattern Errata: Need 2 skeins of main body color for size 3-6 year old. This may not be an error, but instead of finishing the hat at 25 stitches, I finished it at 31 stitches, effectively shortening the hat by a couple rows. For other errata, see the Knitting Pages.
Pattern Modifications: Since I ran out of the dark blue color, I added the bit of light blue at the top of the hat. I also outlined the heart with a broken chain stitch. I added a knotted i-cord button to hide the hole in the top of the hat.
Yarn Brand: Rowan Handknit DK Cotton in 277 Turkish Plum (navy blue) and 287 Diana (periwinkle)
Quantity: 2 skeins main body color and 1 skein contrast color. There is a typo in the pattern for the 3-6 year old size -- 2 skeins, not 1, required of the main body color!
Needles: Sizes 3 and 6 straight needles
Gauge: 20 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on size 6 needles
